HAMPDEN, Maine (WGAN) State Police say Detective Ben Campbell was struck and killed Wednesday morning in a crash on Interstate 95 in Hampden.

Police say the crash took place south of the Colebrook Road overpass just after 7:30 a.m.

The 31-year-old Campbell had stepped out of his police vehicle at the site of a disabled car along the Interstate. At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Maine State Police Colonel Jon Cote said Campbell died when a tire became separated from a passing tractor trailer and struck him.

Police say the trooper was rushed by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he died.
