PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Fire officials are investigating two fires that broke out in Portland Tuesday afternoon. Crews responded to a fire on Alder St. around 2:30. Shortly after putting out that fire crews responded to another fire just a few blocks away on Valley St.

Interim Fire Chief Keith Gautreau says fighting both fires took a big toll on firefighters. One firefighter was even transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Officials believe both fires started outside of the buildings. Officials say nobody was injured in either fire. Gautreau believes there were at least 5 units between the two buildings. The Red Cross is assisting at least some of those residents
