BELFAST, Maine (AP) Some people are calling for justice following the death of a girl who police say was allegedly beaten by her parents in Maine.
Mourners from as far away as Kittery joined in a vigil Saturday evening on behalf of 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy in downtown Belfast.
WLBZ-TV reports that many criticized child welfare officials of failing to protect the girl.
Organizer Nancy Barlow said “that little girl slipped through the cracks.” Another organizer, Patti Beeton, said, “She was failed.”
Julio and Sharon Carrillo, of Stockton Springs, are charged with murder in the girl’s death.
Former neighbors say they reported abuse months ago to police and state health and human services’ officials. The couple has been ordered held on $500,000 cash bail.
