FRYEBURG, Maine (AP) _ One of the biggest and oldest celebrations of farming and livestock in the Northeast is getting started in Fryeburg.

The Fryeburg Fair got its start in 1851, and the 2018 edition gets underway on Sunday in western Maine. The fair brings thousands of people together with more than 3,000 animals ranging from oxen and steers to rabbits and chickens.

The fair signals the end to Maine’s busy summer and fall agriculture fair season. The events got started in June in Houlton and crisscrossed through the state, including venerable and popular fairs in Bangor, Skowhegan and Unity.

The Fryeburg Fair’s Annual Woodsmen’s Field Day is scheduled for Monday. Organizers say it’s the biggest spectator woodsmen event in North America and includes log-rolling and axe throwing.
