Bangor’s abandoned underground infrastructure is creating sinkholes throughout the city that work crews are struggling to fix.
According to the Bangor Daily News, work crews have had to patch up six new “urgent” sinkholes this year, one being 35 feet deep at the intersection of Harlow Street and Kenduskeag Avenue.
Bangor’s public work crews say the city’s extensive underground infrastructure, which no one has a blueprint for, makes long term repairs difficult without knowing what is causing the sinkhole below.
Public work officials say this is a fairly common problem in older Maine cities. They say cities like Lewiston and Portland also struggle with sink holes caused by forgotten underground utility structures that have failed overtime.
