Lawmakers on Tuesday were set to discuss a bill that would require the public be allowed to post comments on government-run social media accounts in Maine.

Supporters of the bill like the Maine Policy Institute say social media sites now serve as “extensions of the public square.”

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is opposed to the legislation, saying social media algorithms often push disinformation to increase engagement.

The bill needs committee approval before it heads to the House and Senate.
