BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) Bowdoin College has opened its new, state-of-the-art environmental studies center.

College officials held a dedication ceremony for the Roux Center for the Environment Thursday. The center will serve as an interdisciplinary research hub.

Prof. Matthew Klingle says the building supports “scientists, social scientist, artists and humanities scholars” which allows for “collaborative research and teaching.” Klingle says an interdisciplinary approach is vital to solving environmental problems.

The nearly 30,000-square-foot building is the college’s first building to be designated a Platinum LEED facility, which indicates it has energy savings and other environmental features. The building includes a vegetative roof, triple glazed glass and a solar array.

Donors David and Barbara Roux donated $10 million toward the center.
