State courthouses in Portland, Bangor and Augusta will stay open until 9 p.m. Tuesday to accept emergency filings related to the election.

The Maine Judicial Branch says a judge, clerk and marshal will be on duty at each courthouse to accept and act on any emergency filings.

The announcement comes after the federal Department of Justice announced its sending election monitors to Portland, South Portland and Lewiston.

The agency previously announced plans to send 1,000 monitors to locations in all 50 states.

The move also comes as there are numerous federal lawsuits around the country that are targeting election results.

Maine Superior Court Chief Justice Robert Mullen and Maine District Court Chief Judge Brent Davis have also issued an order requiring all filings pertaining to the election to be filed with paper documents at a clerk’s office, and not through the state’s electronic filing system.
