OXFORD, Maine (WGAN) Witnesses spotted a large police presence in the town of Oxford on Wednesday, as officers tried to make contact with a wanted man.

Just before 5 p.m., Maine State Police said they were attempting to locate a man who is wanted out of Oxford County on multiple warrants as well as a no-contact order, which he had violated earlier in the day in Lewiston. He had left before police arrived.

State police said they tracked him to a residence in Oxford but hadn’t yet been able to make contact with anyone in the house.

The Sun Journal reported that witnesses heard sounds of gunfire in the area, and that roads in the area of French Road and Route 121 were closed down as officers set up a perimeter. A tactical team was also seen in the area.

Police say they don’t believe there’s any threat to the public.
