A bill in the state legislature to protect children from online harassment and “doxxing” is moving forward after passage in both the House and Senate on Tuesday.
The bill would let families seek court action if a child is targeted.
The measure passed mostly on party lines in favor of the Democratic majority in both chambers – 78-69 in the House, 18-14 in the Senate.
It’ll need further voting in both chambers before being sent to Governor Janet Mills.
The bill is moving ahead after Republican Representative Laurel Libby of Auburn was censured in the House for posting photos of a transgender high school athlete on social media. It was filed before the episode involving Libby.
The measure allows for lawsuits against a person who engages in doxxing of a minor and also would allow a minor to obtain a protection through a harassment order.
