Lawmakers in the Maine House approved a controversial bill Tuesday that would provide nearly $6.2 million for family planning clinics like Planned Parenthood.

Supporters of the bill say no state funding will go to abortions but will instead be used for things like birth control, cancer screenings and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.

Republicans argue there are no guardrails in the bill to ensure that the funding isn’t used for abortions.

The bill goes to the Maine Senate next.
