Maine’s lax approach to vulgarity on vanity license plates may soon become more restrictive.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill that would ban obscene language on vanity plates. If the bill becomes law, the Secretary of State’s Office could refuse to issue certain license plates with vulgar language, and require drivers to stop using the ones they have now for the same reason.

Maine’s motor vehicle laws changed in 2015, but only allowed the Secretary of State’s Office to reject plates that suggest an association with a public institution or encourage violent or illegal acts.

The bill faces a few more votes becoming law.
