South Portland – The Portland Players Community Theatre located at 420 Cottage Road in South Portland, the oldest in Maine and 2nd oldest in New England is back with a new show for the first time since being shut down by the pandemic last year.  The show is called Cabaret the Musical and opens on November 5th with three weekends of shows every Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 and on Sunday at 2:30 in the afternoon until November 22nd.  Kelly Mosher, VP of Publicity for the Portland Players describes Cabaret the Musical:

“The show cabaret takes place in Berlin from 1929 to 1930. Clifford Bradshaw struggling American writer is looking for inspiration for his next novel on his first night in Berlin Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Club, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange omniscience and gender bending Master of Ceremonies VMC here Cliff meet Sally bows, a vivacious cabaret performer and an utterly lost soul. Sally and Cliff begin a relationship which blossoms into a dreamlike romance. As time passes however, the situation in Berlin changes from exciting to vital to ominous and violent and things turn for the worst in the world of our protagonists.”

She describes the show as a “Hilarious show, but with darker themes” and does not recommend bringing small children.

Kelly Mosher noted the show features more than 20 people in the cast, one of the largest casts of any musical or play in Maine.  The Portland Players also has more offerings coming up in January, March and again in May or June which will include 3 musicals and a small play, with details to be announced soon.  She said a musical to be announced for next summer “Is going to be very big” and will be holding auditions soon for cast members for all their upcoming shows.

Health and Safety protocols will be in place as Portland Players will require you to show proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test and masks are required as well.  Kelly Mosher also noted that just prior to COVID the theatre installed an all new Air Conditioning and Air Purifying system which she noted was “a little ironic” that got installed just before knowing how important it would be.
