The Maine Senate voted in favor of a bill to establish a statewide paid family and medical leave program.
According to the Portland Press Herald, senators voted 22-12 Wednesday in support of the program. It would use contributions from employers and employees to pay for as much as 12 weeks of paid leave.
Employees with newborns or other family members to take care of could qualify.
The bill still needs to pass in the House and get the signature of Gov. Janet Mills. She has not yet committed to supporting it. A spokesperson said she’s reviewing the bill and is encouraged by amendments made by lawmakers.
