Poor road conditions in Portland area come at a cost to motorists, report finds

Poor road conditions are costing Portland drivers nearly $1,400 a year on average.

The national non-profit TRIP reports that of the 20 most congested corridors in Maine, 17 are in the Portland area. They also found that 44% of major locally and state-maintained roads are in poor or mediocre condition, and that comes at a cost to Mainers driving on those roads. That’s due to traffic crashes, congestion-related delays, and more expensive vehicle maintenance.

Congress Street from I-295 to the Eastern Prom ranked at number one on the list of the most congested corridors.

Maine Motor Transport Association vice president Tim Doyle said the sooner work begins to fix and maintain roads, the less expensive it will be.
