Portland residents say they are finding heroin and fentanyl needles on the ground around the city.
Many say they are also frustrated with unhoused campers setting up tent close to or in public parks, where several used needles have been found on the ground.
CBS 13 spoke with parent Ruth Alden, who says she found a used needle where her daughter was playing in Deering Oaks. Alden, who’s trained in first aid says a drop of fentanyl is all it would take to threaten a child’s life.
“It’s absolutely terrifying,” Alden said, “There are children with bare feet all over. We need more of a response from the city. We need to see sharps containers all around this place.”
There have been 70 reports to the city’s website of needles found in the Portland peninsula. Over a dozen needles were found in Deering Oaks.
Jim Pinkerton of East End Child Care says he hopes to see more police presence in places frequented by kids as a preventative measure. He says he’s seen people drinking alcohol and smoking in front of kids in Peppermint Park this past week.
“Just have somebody police the playground, at least,” Pinkerton said, “because they know we come here daily.”
The city has said they cleared out a homeless encampment from the park Friday and have cleanup crews clean the Deering Oaks ravine every morning and night to find any needles that may have been left there.
