South Portland police mistakenly apprehend Deering High School student during lunch

A student was mistakenly apprehended by police during their lunch period at Deering High School in Portland.

School officials said the student was detained Tuesday afternoon by South Portland police and released shortly afterwards.

In a press release, South Portland Police said they were looking for 19-year-old Miles Hibbard, who was identified as a suspect in a burglary.

The department says two people were temporarily detained near Orkney Street around 11:30 a.m. and then released after less than five minutes.

Police say they later searched Hibbard’s home and arrested him at his workplace in Cape Elizabeth.

The investigation is ongoing.
