Deputies have identified two people who died when their SUV hit a tree and burst into flames in Readfield.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just before 1 a.m. last Monday on Main Street, where the vehicle was spotted driving more than 70 mph past a state police trooper.

The trooper later came across the crash scene, where 25-year-old Carl Hall of Mt. Vernon and his passenger, 28-year-old Emily Ouelette of Auburn had died.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say speed may have been a factor in the crash.
